INDICATIONS
WAPOMEP® is indicated for the treatment and prevention of gastric acid-related disorders, including:
Gastric ulcers
Duodenal ulcers
Gastritis
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Esophagitis
NSAID-associated gastric ulceration
Stress-related gastric ulceration
Hyperacidity associated with systemic disease
It may also be used as part of combination therapy for gastric ulcer management and upper gastrointestinal disorders.
PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI).
It irreversibly inhibits the gastric H⁺/K⁺-ATPase enzyme (proton pump) in parietal cells, resulting in profound and prolonged suppression of gastric acid secretion.
Its acid-suppressive effect lasts approximately 24 hours following a single daily dose.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
Administer orally.
Dogs
0.7–1.0 mg/kg body weight once daily
Cats
0.5–1.0 mg/kg body weight once daily
Treatment duration:
Gastritis: 5–7 days
Gastric ulcers: 14–28 days
Chronic acid-related disease: According to veterinary assessment.
Administer preferably on an empty stomach.
Do not crush or split gastro-resistant tablets.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to omeprazole or other proton pump inhibitors.
SPECIAL WARNINGS
Use with caution in animals with severe hepatic impairment.
Long-term therapy should be periodically reviewed by the attending veterinarian.
ADVERSE REACTIONS
Occasionally:
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Flatulence
Mild reduction in appetite
Rarely:
Transient elevation of liver enzymes
Hypersensitivity reactions
USE DURING PREGNANCY AND LACTATION
Use only according to the benefit-risk assessment of the attending veterinarian.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Omeprazole may alter the absorption of drugs requiring an acidic gastric environment.
Use caution when administered with:
Ketoconazole
Itraconazole
Iron preparations
Clopidogrel (where applicable)
OVERDOSE
Overdosage is generally well tolerated but may result in:
Gastrointestinal disturbances
Lethargy
Reduced appetite
Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
STORAGE
Store below 25°C.
Protect from moisture and direct sunlight.
Keep in the original blister until use.
SHELF LIFE
36 months.
