INDICATIONS
WAPMET® Tablets are indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria and protozoa.
Recommended for:
Acute and chronic diarrhea
Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis
Colitis
Inflammatory bowel disease (adjunct therapy)
Giardia infections
Clostridial enteritis
Anaerobic oral infections
Dental infections
Periodontal disease
Deep bite wounds
Skin and soft tissue infections involving anaerobic bacteria
Treatment should be based on bacterial culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing whenever possible.
SPECTRUM OF ACTIVITY
Effective against susceptible strains of:
Clostridium spp.
Bacteroides spp.
Fusobacterium spp.
Peptostreptococcus spp.
Helicobacter spp.
Giardia duodenalis
Trichomonas spp.
PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antimicrobial with antibacterial and antiprotozoal activity.
It acts by disrupting microbial DNA synthesis, leading to cell death. It is highly active against obligate anaerobic bacteria and protozoal organisms.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
Administer orally.
Dogs and Cats
10–25 mg/kg body weight
Twice daily
Treatment duration:
Gastrointestinal infections: 5–7 days
Giardia: 5–7 days
Anaerobic infections: 7–10 days
Chronic enteropathies: According to veterinary judgment.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to metronidazole.
Use with caution in animals with severe hepatic disease.
SPECIAL WARNINGS
Avoid prolonged treatment unless clearly indicated.
Use antimicrobials responsibly to minimize antimicrobial resistance.
ADVERSE REACTIONS
Occasionally:
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Reduced appetite
Hypersalivation
Rarely:
Ataxia
Tremors
Neurological signs
Seizures following overdose or prolonged treatment
Treatment should be discontinued if neurological signs develop.
USE DURING PREGNANCY AND LACTATION
Use only according to the benefit-risk assessment by the attending veterinarian.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Use with caution when administered together with:
Phenobarbital
Cimetidine
Warfarin-type anticoagulants
OVERDOSE
May cause:
Ataxia
Tremors
Depression
Seizures
Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
STORAGE
Store below 25°C.
Protect from moisture and direct sunlight.
Store in the original package.
