INDICATIONS

WAPGABA® is indicated as an adjunctive treatment for:

Dogs

• Neuropathic pain

• Chronic osteoarthritis pain (multimodal therapy)

• Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD)

• Cancer-associated pain

• Epilepsy (adjunctive anticonvulsant)

• Anxiety and stress associated with transportation or veterinary visits

Cats

• Chronic pain

• Neuropathic pain

• Stress reduction before transportation or veterinary examination

• Adjunctive therapy for seizure disorders

PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

Gabapentin is a structural analogue of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), although it does not bind directly to GABA receptors.

It acts by binding to the α2δ subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system, reducing the release of excitatory neurotransmitters involved in pain transmission and seizure activity.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Administer orally.

Dogs

10–20 mg/kg

Every 8–12 hours

Cats

5–10 mg/kg

Every 12 hours

For stress reduction in cats:

Administer 50–100 mg per cat approximately 2–3 hours before transport or veterinary examination, according to veterinary advice.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to gabapentin or any excipient.

Use cautiously in animals with severe renal impairment.

SPECIAL WARNINGS

Dose adjustment may be required in animals with reduced renal function.

Do not discontinue prolonged therapy abruptly.

Use caution when combining with other central nervous system depressants.

ADVERSE REACTIONS

Occasionally:

• Mild sedation

• Ataxia

• Lethargy

• Increased appetite

Rarely:

• Vomiting

• Diarrhea

• Hypersensitivity reactions

These effects are generally transient.

USE DURING PREGNANCY AND LACTATION

The safety of gabapentin has not been fully established in pregnant or lactating animals.

Use only after a benefit-risk assessment by the attending veterinarian.

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Use with caution when administered with:

• Opioids

• Sedatives

• Antiepileptic drugs

• Antacids (may reduce gabapentin absorption if given simultaneously)

OVERDOSE

Signs may include:

• Marked sedation

• Ataxia

• Weakness

• Hypotension

Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.

STORAGE

Store below 25°C.

Protect from moisture and direct sunlight.

Keep in the original package.
